What is Digital Voice?
Digital Voice is a voice service delivered over a broadband connection rather than the old analogue phone network. Depending on the provider, it may be called Digital Voice, broadband voice, internet calls or VoIP.
For many people, the change is simple: the phone connects to the broadband router or an adapter rather than the old wall socket. For others, especially vulnerable users or homes with alarms and care devices, it needs more care.
Do you need it?
If you only use mobiles and do not need a home number, you may not need any voice service at all. In that case, a broadband-only package can make sense.
If you want to keep a home number, receive calls from family, or use equipment that depends on a phone connection, you should ask the provider how voice replacement works before placing an order.
Broadband first, voice second
For most broadband shoppers, the best order is to choose the strongest broadband connection available, then decide whether to add a voice service. Full fibre, cable and 5G home broadband can all work without a traditional analogue landline.
Important: digital voice services may not work during a power cut unless backup power is provided. Ask the provider about battery backup if the phone line is safety-critical.
Checklist before switching
- Ask whether your existing phone number can be kept.
- Check how phones connect to the router or adapter.
- Tell the provider about telecare, fall alarms, burglar alarms or lift phones.
- Ask what happens during a power cut.
- Check call costs if you still make regular landline calls.
Broadband without a phone service
No-line-rental broadband is often best for people who do not want or need a home phone. Full fibre, cable and 5G broadband can all be ordered without a traditional analogue landline in many areas.
Common Digital Voice questions
Can I keep my number?
Often yes, but number porting rules and timing vary. Check before cancelling an existing phone service.
Will old handsets work?
Some phones connect through the router or adapter. Very old or specialist devices may need replacing.
What about emergency calls?
Digital voice needs power. Vulnerable customers should ask about backup power and priority support.
Can I go broadband only?
Yes, if you do not need a home phone number. Check mobile coverage and household needs first.
Compare broadband options first, then decide whether you need a digital voice add-on.
