Renters and students often need flexibility more than maximum speed. A 24-month fibre contract can be poor value if your tenancy ends in 9 months and the provider will not move the service to your next address.
Before comparing speed, check the minimum term, moving-home policy, cancellation fees and whether the provider offers monthly rolling options.

- Will an engineer need landlord or managing-agent permission?
- Can the contract be moved to a new address?

- Are housemates sharing the bill, and who owns the account?
When 5G home broadband makes sense
5G home broadband can be the cleanest option where you cannot get permission for installation or you need internet quickly. The trade-off is that performance can vary by signal, building materials, network congestion and router placement.
If you work from home, game online or share with several people, check return windows and test the connection in the room where the router will actually sit.
Shared houses: pick the right speed tier
A single person can often manage with a lower speed tier, but a shared home needs more headroom. Multiple video calls, smart TVs, consoles and cloud backups can quickly expose weak upload speeds or limited 5G signal.
If several people split the bill, it may be better value to choose a reliable mid-tier full fibre or cable package than the cheapest available plan. Agree who owns the account and what happens when one housemate moves out.
